FAQ

* How old do you have to be to get a tattoo?

You must be 18.  Not any younger.  Doesn't matter if your parents will sign for you or swear on a stack of Bibles. That is Illinois State Law and we will be following all the laws of the state.  You will be asked to show ID, so please bring a state issued photo ID or driver’s license with you when you come in for your tattoo.

* How old do you have to be to get a piercing?

We will pierce 10 to 14 - EAR LOBES ONLY.

15 to 17 years of age - EAR, NAVEL AND NOSTRIL ONLY.

Under 18 must have a PARENT present with them to fill out paperwork and give consent.  The minor must have a photo ID and a birth certificate.  The parent must have a photo ID.  The last names on both IDs must be the same.  If they are not the same, then the parent will need to bring in court documentation proving they are the legal guardian of the minor wishing to be pierced.

18 and older - All piercings.

* Do I need to make an appointment?

Appointments are not required, but they are a good idea. We take walk-ins whenever possible, but availability varies from day to day.  For custom work, it is best to make an appointment so that the artist has time to draw the tattoo.

* How do I make an appointment?

You can call ahead to schedule a consultation, or just stop by.   You can also email us at five-otattoo@comcast.net or contact us here at our Contact Us link on our webpage.  Please bring printed copies of any reference material you may have. If we are creating an original drawing for you, the deposit is $50.  The amount of the deposit will be deducted from the final price of the tattoo.

* How much will my tattoo cost?

We get this question A LOT…  The cost of the tattoo will depend on many factors.  The size of the tattoo, the location of the body in which it’s going, the detail in the tattoo…if it’s an original drawing or flash art, etc.  For specific estimates or price quotes, please come into the shop and speak to an artist in person. You can also let your artist know if you have a budget, and he or she will keep it in mind in designing the tattoo.

* Do you do ultraviolet/black light tattoos?

Nope.  We cannot vouch for the safety of such chemically reactive inks, so we donʼt use them.

* Do you do all-white tattoos?

All-white tattoos are tricky, because itʼs almost impossible to guarantee how they will look. They really only show up on pale skin—remember, youʼre seeing the ink through a layer of skin, so the darker your skin is, the less visible a pale color will be. Sometimes they end up looking weird and yellowish, and sometimes they donʼt show up at all. If you want an all-white tattoo, please come into the shop and speak to an artist in person about it.

* Can you fix/cover a tattoo I already have?

We are happy to touch up or rework old tattoos, or to cover them, if we can. Whether or not we can depends on the tattoo. The best thing to do is come by and show us what you have so we can let you know what is or isnʼt possible. Keep in mind that a cover-up will always be significantly larger than the original tattoo. Tattoo ink is not opaque, so a cover-up is more about disguising the old tattoo, rather than painting over it.

* Does it hurt?

The short answer is yes, it does hurt, but it’s not unbearable.  Everyone’s pain threshold is different and each location is different for each person.

* Should I tip my artist?

Yes, if you think he or she did a good job. If you would like a guideline, you can think of it as you would any service industry—the norm is 10-20%, though we very much appreciate whatever amount you feel is appropriate.

* Do you take Credit Cards?

Yes we take Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express.
